Keep Your Dog Cool

If you want to know what your dog is saying the answer is easy..."please install air conditioning in my doghouse or let me in!!" A doghouse will trap heat and become extremely uncomfortable and unsafe for your dog. The response to hot weather is varied but almost everyone can agree that without a way to cool off it can become extremely uncomfortable. For you AND for your pets.

Make sure your dog has a shady place to lie down and rest.
Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water.
Take your dog for walks in the early morning or evening when the temperatures are cooler.
Remember that sand and asphalt are hot surfaces and can hurt your dogs paws.
Never leave your dog in a vehicle with the windows closed.

Watch for these warning signs that your dog is overheated:
heavy panting
glazed eyes
a rapid pulse
unsteadiness
a staggering gait
vomiting
a deep red or purple tongue

Signs and Treatment for Overheating provided by The Humane Society of the United States
.

If you see signs that your dog is becoming overheated you need to lower the dog's body temperature immediately.
Move your dog into the shade and apply cool, but not cold, water all over your dog's body.
Apply ice packs or cool towels to your pet's head, neck, and chest only.
Let your pet drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes.
If you feel these attempts to cool your dog off are not helping take your dog to the veterinarian.
