May brings on new things! More Sunshine! Flowers blooming! Grass is green and growing! You want to be outside more! Finally after such a long winter we are ready! In Upstate & Western New York we have such a short summer we usually cram as much as possible in it. Seems like we run out of time before it's gone!
There are a lot of great things to do and take advantage of visiting our beautiful state, hiking, waterfalls, zoos and animal parks, water sports, boating, camping, explore and have fun!
Then there's home repair projects and yard work! Because we are afterall, a home repair newsletter! You are faithful listeners of the Home Repair Clinic with Jim Salmon & John Welch as well as their guests! The first thing is to walk around your house and yard, note what needs done and prioritize. Some things may be more urgent-focus on that and move on to what are improvements as well as for entertaining and enjoying your property. The sooner to get these done the better to enjoy it all!

The month of May brings, Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day & Memorial Day, as some of the top days to celebrate. Take the time to spend time with your mother or remember her, time with family is so important. Many times that's all mom wants is family rather than material gifts.
For Memorial Day be sure to attend a service honoring and mourning those who gave their life while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Most towns have some sort of ceremony, it's very moving and so important.

Jim Salmon & John Welch truly believe in young people learning trades, whether it is in construction, welding, landscaping, electrical, plumbing, you get the idea. Therefore, The Salmon Children's Foundation has been giving out $1000 scholarships to high school seniors for the past few years, and is doing so this year. If you have or know a 2025 graduating senior in our area who is pursuing the trades, please have them fill out the application and requested information in this link, which explains it further. It is so important no matter what time of the year, that your home is properly insulated. If you have blown in or fiberglas, chances are it is no longer effective. Over time it compresses the layers, especially if it gets wet, then it's just not doing the job it's suppose to. Getting Coler Insulation over to remove the old and spray foam will increase the protection. Spray foam is rated differently anyway. Be sure to get a home inspection if you're purchasing a new-to-you house. Even if you're having a house built it should be inspected before closing. New builds have problems too. All houses have something, getting a home inspection isn't just to "find issues". A side note, an inspection doesn't create the problem, it makes you aware of any. Being informed is best, during an inspection Jim will discuss these with you also prioritizing their importance. It helps with negotiating & budgeting.

Jim has a new rescue dog, Willie, (actually his name changes frequently!) Apparently at one point of rescue he was called Wally, then he was adopted and his name was changed to Willie. After his owner had to move into assisted living the family was looking for a new home for him. Hearing Jim on the Home Repair Clinic talk about it's time to get another dog, this family member called Jim's office about Willie. Jim went to see him and instantly knew this boy was coming home with him!
Jim was ok with the name, however other family members, not so much. Buddy came to be, along with Tobey, Pup-pup, pooper, really doesn't matter to him! He chooses to ignore all of them!

You've most likely heard Jim brag about his new woodworking shop being built by SL Custom Construction. This year's weather hasn't been good to work outdoors, however they did the best they could! Well, it's almost done! Probably will be by the time you're reading this. Jim has a workbench and a small area currently, which anyone who uses tools, does home repair knows how filled up and somewhat disorganized your workspace can get. So Jim has always wanted a separate building to be able to make furniture and anything else he can dream up. He contacted SL Custom Construction, they discussed his plan then got to work building a 24' x 28' pole barn with a high ceiling.
